The Green Gym Project will be starting again soon on Phoenix Park What is a "Green Gym"?: The Green Gym promotes health, fitness and well-being through physical work improving the local environment. It is an opportunity to learn new skills and to meet people whilst taking part in conservation activities. How did it Start?: The idea was thought up by Dr. William Bird of the Sonning Common Health Centre after the success of his Health Walks project. It has been developed across the country by BTCV (the British Trust for Conservation Volunteers) The Green Gym and Phoenix Park: Phoenix Park is an ideal location for a Green Gym. It is a rare piece of green open space next to a vibrant mixed community with major health challenges. Work by the Friends of Phoenix Park and local residents, including local school children has already seen: Clearance of fly-tipped rubbish Regular litter pick-up groups Practical conservation tasks such as bulb and wildflower planting Tree planting during National Tree Week Creating a nature trail, outdoor classroom area Running special, free and accredited training days on footpath construction. Now Green Gym activity days shall be organised on a regular basis to continue the good work and link with the "Walk your Way to Health" scheme introduced in 2002. More information will be available shortly Article: by Cllr Judith Rowley December 2006 |
